QUEEN'S OWN TOWN v ASHBOURNE

"Queen's Own Town, Feb. 23.

An eleven of our cricket club journeyed to Ashbourne on Saturday last, and gained a decisive victory. Owing largely to the success of Jamie Sutherland's bowling the Ashbournes were all disposed of 48 runs, which the Queen's Own club were enabled to cover with the loss of only one wicket, through the excellent stand made at the sticks by R. H. Collett and A. Cameron. Below are the scores :-

"1895 at a club meeting it was suggested that an association be formed

comprising Ashbourne, Macclesfield, Meadows, Milang, Langhorne Creek,

Strathalbyn and Woodchester."

From the Southern Argus,

Thursday March 28, 1895

"Finnis, March 23.

A cricket team from Ashbourne played a return match here today with the Finnis Club, made up of the following eleven:- Messrs. T. Collett, S. Collett, Alec Cameron, J. Chibnall, Mians, Jas. Sutherland, W. Cooper (capt.), E. Tucker, G. Parker, H. Evans and T. Porter. Unfortunately the scoring-book was not given to your correspondent, and the scores are not given in detail. The visitors who turned out a surprise for our men, sent the home team in first, but alas, for the uncertainties of cricket, they were all disposed of for a total of 6 runs, S. Collett 3 and E. Tucker 2 being the only ones to break the nest egg, the other one having to be recorded as a sundry. For the visitors J. Allinghame took 6 wickets for 1 run, which I believe, must be a record. The Ashbournes then took strike, and suceeded in compiling 72 runs, J. Carter 38 and J. Manion 13 not out being the principal scorers, after which returned home highly elated with their success. It is difficult to understand the total collapse of the home team, and it must be put down to one of those things that "no fellah can understand."

Thursday April 11, 1895

"The return match between the above clubs was played at Blackfellow's Creek on Saturday, March 30, and resulted in a win for the home team by 12 runs. The Ashbourne skipper won the toss and elected to go to the wickets, R. Kirkham being the only one to reach double figures, who played a fair innings for 17 runs. The highest on the Creek side was Hailstone 15, and Ellis 12. Several splendid catches were missed on both sides. Appended are the scores:-

"At that time there were quite a few teams around locally to make a good association. They included Finnis, Strathalbyn, Ashbourne, Wistow, Milang, Pt. Sturt, Woodchester, Goolwa and Langhorne Creek.

The following report appeared in January 1896 in the Southern Argus.

ASHBOURNE v FINNIS

The above match was played at Ashbourne on January 4 and a very close game resulted in a win for Ashbourne by the small margin of 6 runs, which would have been larger but for the excellent bowling and batting of S. Collett and W. Cooper of the Finnis Club. The following are the scores :-

Round 6 - Details

Ashbourne travelled to Hahndorf for a one day match on their oval. I forget who won the toss but Hahndorf batted first. Our openers were hammered a little but the next change bowlers bounced back quickly to knock over a few quick wickets. After loosing three or four wickets, Hahndorf looked a little lost but scraped the score along while losing regular wickets.

Ashbourne then batted and started slowly losing steady wickets. At about 4/5's through their overs Ashbourne were 5 for 85, still needing about forty runs to win. Eddie joined Ben Tilley at the crease and with determiniation a few well placed boundarys saw the score reach to within five runs of victory when Ben holed out. Eddie later hit the winning runs and despite losing another wicket, Ashbourne went on to secure the game at 7 for 154 runs from their 50 overs. A good but not convincing win.

Round 7 - Details

Ashbourne once again travelled, this time to Milang Oval. Milang batted first and compiled 177 off less than their allotted overs. Ashbourne batted and scored 16 runs that day. The next week Ashbourne came back and although at one stage were 5 for less than one hundred, their long batting line-up prevailed and saw them gradually overtake Milangs score to win. They ended up getting 235 for the loss of 9 wickets.

Round 8 - Details

Ashbourne, by now getting used to bowling first, played at Callington on a very hard and flat Callington turf wicket. In a few years time the oval will also be very very good as the grass reaches a better level of cover. In the meantime it is a bit of a gamble getting behind the ball when fielding. Anyhow B/C got off to a quick start but started losing regular wickets. A bit of a mid order resurgence saw one B/C batsman remain on about 82 runs not out. This shows up the rest of the team as they only managed 177 all out on a fast oval and flat track. Credit where it is due thoughas a few of the Ashbourne bowlers bowled well and Ashbourne's fileding including a TV like runout, vastly improved after tea. So much so in fact that Ashbourne had 16 or so overs to bat that first day. Unfortunately the Ashbourne's lost two quick wickets before stumps to be 2 for about 16 runs.

Ashbourne came back the next week, and Leighton and Andrew carried the score on to reach about ninety before Leighton was dismissed for a creditable 70 runs! Andrew continued to accumulate runs steadily with a number of partners including Dave Brown who knocked up a quick fire 34! By the the game was over Andrew had carried his bat through to the end of Ashbourne's innings remaining 151 not out! Asbourne then bowled 5 overs to Callington for a bit of a hit. A well compiled victory.

Round 9 - Details

Wistow came to Ashbourne and contrary to opinion elected to bat after winning the toss. Visiting teams predominantly elect to bowl being unsure of the wicket. The oval looked magnificent and although the pitch looked dark, it was flat and hard. Ashbourne bowled well to contain Wistow to 189 on a pitch and oval that should've seen over 250 runs scored. Ashbourne batted for one over and Leighton scored 6 runs off the over.

The next week Leighton had to attend a wedding and so Gordon Stidston deputised for him as opener. Ashbourne were going to be a winner regardless of how well Gordon and Andrew batted. In theory a number one and a number eleven should not really have been together long. As it turned out at tea they had taken the score to over 130 for no loss of wickets. A few overs later Gordon was dismissed and Toby Prior came to the wicket. He looked a bit scratchy early but kept the ball out. A few ovewrs passed and Andrew continued to amass runs. (Last game finishing on 151 not out) Andrew had just reached his nineties when he set off for a quick single, reversed his decision and sent Toby back. He was in strife and we thought he had a cramp but in fact had injured his knee. He consequently retired hurt and Ben Tilley marched to the wicket. Ashbourne was still short about 40 odd runs to win. Both relatively new batsment sttled in. They both got their eyes in and suddenly it was on for young and old. Each appeared to want to outscore the other. After approxomately ten overs Be TIlley was dismissed for 69, including six sixes and many 4's and Eddie Janmaat came to the crease. Eddie then farmed the strike to Toby who literally took over hitting sixes "with a grin at Ashbourne". Unfortunately Toby was out caught for ninety, ten short of a deserved 100. Rodney Meissner joined Eddie after many games sidelined with a broken thumb. Eddie and Rodney played out the last few overs and Ashbourne finished on 3 wickets for 320 runs from their 71 overs.

A comprehensive victory that likely put Ashbourne into Wistow's previous fourth spot on the ladder. Meanwhile we expected Echunga to achieve an outright and this may have put them above Wistow as well. Echunga fifth and Wistow sixth. Meanwhile unbeknown to the "Ashbournes", Strathalbyn did not get the 261 runs needed to beat early competition leaders Macclesfield. Instead "Maccy" nearly inflicted an outright victory over Strathalbyn! Surely this secured Maccy in the four after previously slipping down the ladder. We assume Mount Barker Blue also won this round.

That should leave the top four including Langhorne Creek, Mt Barker (Blue) Maccy and Ashbourne. These are closely followed by Echunga and Wistow. There appears to still be a chance for the first six to get into the top four places in one combination or another.
