Story recounted by several players and supporters. There was a match at the Strathalbyn oval where Don Bradman played and a few of the Ashbourne players were playing as well. The ball had just been hit to or over the boundary. The good part about the story is that a fieldsman retrieved the ball and threw it back to the bowlers end and Don "caught" the ball on his bat with a minimum of effort. He then tapped it in the air a few times and "passed" it over to the bowler! Milang versus Ashbourne. Competition was pretty keen between players wanting to bowl and bat; as the statistics elsewhere will show, but in this one particular game Claude Sims playing for Milang batted when Rod Meyer was bowling. Claude recalls very clearly hitting six sixes from that particular eight ball over! |
Afternoon Tea. There was competition off the field amongst many clubs as well. Many stories have been recalled about the ladies outdoing each other in trying to provide the "best" afternoon tea at the cricket. Some recall Finnins as being very strong in this area but the ladies at Ashbourne certainly won a few times as well. Ashbourne was remembered for putting out crayfish on occasions! Games at Milang were also remembered fondly in relation to afternoon tea. Many people playing now would welcome this type of competition to return to our own games!
